Edward Almeida Flutes was an American manufacturer of handmade concert flutes founded by master flute maker Edward “Ed” Almeida.

Introduced in 1969, Edward Almeida flutes were produced in limited numbers and became recognized for their precision craftsmanship, traditional hand-built construction, and meticulous attention to detail. Although production ended following Almeida’s death in 1992, his instruments continue to be highly regarded by professional flutists and collectors.

Edward Almeida began his career in 1948 as an apprentice to Verne Q. Powell, developing his skills in the American tradition of handmade flute making. In 1960, he became a part owner of the Powell company, where he contributed to several manufacturing innovations that later became widely adopted within the flute-making industry. Seeking greater independence in instrument design and production, Almeida established his own workshop and introduced the Almeida Flute in 1969.

Each Almeida flute was individually handcrafted and built using precision machining combined with traditional hand-finishing techniques. The instruments were available in sterling silver, 9K rose gold, and 14K rose gold, and featured soldered tone holes, French-style pointed key arms, and a range of optional mechanisms.

Almeida also offered multiple tubing thicknesses and tuning scales, including William Bennett scales for A=440, A=442, and A=444, allowing instruments to be tailored to individual performers’ preferences.

Working largely independently throughout his career, Edward Almeida earned a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and careful attention to every stage of flute making. Because production remained intentionally limited, Almeida flutes are relatively rare today and continue to be valued for their musical qualities, craftsmanship, and place in the history of American handmade flute making.
