Editio Supraphon

Editio Supraphon was the sheet music publishing division of the Czech record label Supraphon and one of the most important music publishers in Czechoslovakia, specializing in Czech classical music, scholarly editions, educational materials, and contemporary works.

The publisher emerged from the Czechoslovak state music publishing system, whose origins date to the nationalization of several major Czech music publishers in 1949. Following a series of organizational changes, the State Music Publishing House (Státní hudební vydavatelství) became known as Editio Supraphon in 1967, continuing the country’s tradition of publishing authoritative editions of Czech composers for performers, scholars, conservatories, and libraries.

Throughout its history, Editio Supraphon became internationally respected for its scholarly publications and complete editions of Czech composers. The publisher collaborated with Bärenreiter on several major editorial projects, including the Complete Critical Edition of the Works of Leoš Janáček, which began in 1978.

Flute Publications

Editio Supraphon published an important collection of flute music, including:

The publisher also issued the renowned historical series Musica antiqua bohemica and Musica Viva Historica, preserving important Czech and European musical heritage through scholarly editions.

Legacy

Following the political and economic changes of the early 1990s, the sheet music publishing division was separated from Supraphon and privatized as Editio Praga in 1993. The long-standing tradition of publishing Czech music has since continued through Bärenreiter Praha, which today publishes scholarly critical editions, Urtext editions, and educational literature while promoting Czech composers through the international Bärenreiter publishing network.

Although Editio Supraphon no longer exists as an independent publisher, its editions remain highly respected by performers, scholars, conservatories, and libraries worldwide. For flutists, its legacy lies in preserving and promoting Czech solo, chamber, historical, and contemporary flute repertoire, much of which continues to be performed and studied today.
