ABOUT THIS COLLECTION

Founded in 1832, the Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest university art museum in the Western Hemisphere. Alongside its renowned art collections, Yale also houses the Morris Steinert Collection of Musical Instruments, featuring more than 1,000 instruments from antiquity to the present. This collection preserves outstanding examples of European, American, and world instruments, representing both fine craftsmanship and cultural diversity.

Flute Highlights:

Pre-Columbian flute with the head of a deity (Veracruz, Mexico, A.D. 900–1519).

Bone flute fragment from Dura-Europos, Syria (323 B.C.–A.D. 256).

European Baroque and Classical flutes, including instruments by Thomas Cahusac Sr., Thomas Stanesby Jr., and Asa Hopkins.

Global flutes representing folk and traditional traditions from various continents.
