ABOUT SIR JAMES GALWAY

Sir James Galway, affectionately known as “The Man with the Golden Flute,” is one of the most celebrated flutists of our time.

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1939, he rose from humble beginnings to become a global icon of classical music. After studies at the Royal College of Music and the Paris Conservatoire, he held principal flute positions in major orchestras, most notably with the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan.

In 1975, he launched his career as a soloist, quickly achieving worldwide fame for his brilliant tone, dazzling virtuosity, and charismatic stage presence. Galway’s career spans over five decades, including extensive tours, more than 30 million recordings sold, and collaborations with leading orchestras, conductors, and artists across classical, folk, and popular genres.

His repertoire ranges from Baroque to contemporary music, alongside beloved transcriptions and crossover projects.

Through the Galway Flute Academy, founded with his wife Lady Jeanne Galway, he continues to mentor and inspire flutists worldwide, nurturing the next generation of performers.

In January 2025, Sir James Galway was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Global Flute Excellence Awards for his extraordinary contributions to flute performance, education, and artistry.
