ABOUT THIS COLLECTION
The Musée de la musique, located within the Philharmonie de Paris, preserves and presents one of the world’s most important musical instrument collections. With more than 8,000 instruments and art objects, and around 1,000 on permanent display, the museum showcases national treasures and legendary pieces, including Chopin’s piano and Brassens’ guitar.
The permanent collection traces the history of Western music from the 17th century to today, while also offering an overview of global musical traditions. Alongside its permanent exhibition, the museum hosts dynamic temporary exhibitions on themes that bridge music with other artistic disciplines — from visual arts to digital culture.
Flutes in the Collection:
The museum holds significant historic flutes, including Baroque traversos, Classical and Romantic instruments, and early Boehm-system flutes by French makers. These instruments are central to understanding the evolution of the flute in Western music, while the global section of the museum introduces bamboo flutes, panpipes, and folk wind instruments from other traditions.
