Contribution Recognized:

In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the flute repertoire through the creation of Flute Concerto No. 2, premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in March 2024 with principal flutist Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson under the baton of Susanna Mälkki. This groundbreaking work showcases the flute’s lyrical and technical brilliance while blending modern sensibilities with timeless romanticism, inspiring flutists and audiences worldwide.

Other Achievements & Honors:

Composer of more than 140 works across orchestral, chamber, ballet, opera, vocal, and instrumental genres.

Widely acclaimed works include the Sonata for Flute and Piano, Op. 23, Flute Concerto No. 1, Op. 39, Piccolo Concerto, Op. 50, and Gargoyles, Op. 29 for piano.

His full-length ballet Frankenstein was co-commissioned by London’s Royal Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, released on DVD/Blu-ray, and performed internationally.

Recipient of multiple honors including the Charles Ives Fellowship (American Academy of Arts and Letters), BMI and ASCAP Awards, CAG Virtuoso Award (lifetime achievement), and the Virgil Thomson Award for vocal composition.

Grammy Award nomination for Piano Concerto No. 2.

His music has been performed by the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, and renowned soloists such as Sir James Galway.

Over 150 commercial recordings on labels including Deutsche Grammophon, Hyperion, RCA Red Seal, and Reference Recordings.

Faculty member at the Mannes School of Music (The New School) since 2012; founder and conductor of the Mannes American Composers Ensemble.
