The Leoš Janáček International Competition was founded in 1993 by the Faculty of Music of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno (HF JAMU) to celebrate and promote the artistic legacy of Leoš Janáček. Originally dedicated to instruments for which Janáček composed — piano, violin, cello, and voice — the competition has since expanded to include wind instruments, string quartets, and other disciplines, presented on a four-year rotating cycle.
Since 2006, the competition has evolved into a major international event, recognized for its high artistic standards, exceptional organization, and its emphasis on Janáček’s repertoire and Central European musical traditions. The flute category, first introduced in 2014, attracts young flutists from around the world seeking both artistic growth and international recognition.
