Drelinger Headjoints
Founded in 1980 by Sanford “Sandy” Drelinger (1943–2021), Drelinger Headjoints was known for over four decades of innovation in flute design and acoustics. A Juilliard graduate and former sound engineer, Drelinger combined musical insight with technical experimentation to expand the tonal and ergonomic possibilities of the flute.
The company introduced several patented designs and materials, including Karritium (a proprietary silver–gold alloy), Super Silver (a tarnish-resistant Argentium silver), and the Air Reed insert of gold or platinum. Drelinger’s most influential invention, the UpRite Headjoint, offered a new ergonomic approach, allowing flutists to play with the instrument held vertically. This design has helped many musicians continue performing despite physical limitations.
Drelinger personally fitted each headjoint for his clients, often through extensive one-on-one testing sessions. His work earned respect from major flutists and teachers, including Samuel Baron, Thomas Nyfenger, and Aralee Dorough, for its distinctive clarity and responsiveness.
Sanford Drelinger passed away in 2021, leaving a legacy of technical innovation and craftsmanship that continues to influence modern headjoint design.
