About the Competition

Founded in 1980 under the patronage of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, the Carl Nielsen International Competition is one of the world’s leading classical music competitions. Initially established for violin, the competition expanded in 1998 to include the flute category, which has since become one of the most prestigious international competitions for young professional flutists.

Organized by the Odense Symphony Orchestra in the birthplace of composer Carl Nielsen, the competition is a proud member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC). Since 2019, the violin, clarinet, and flute competitions have been presented concurrently, highlighting artistic excellence across three major instrumental disciplines.

The competition consists of multiple rounds culminating in a final with orchestra, where finalists demonstrate exceptional technical mastery, musical maturity, and interpretive artistry. Beyond its substantial prize fund, the Carl Nielsen International Competition offers valuable career opportunities through recording projects, international concert engagements, and collaborations with leading musicians and orchestras.

Since its inception, the flute competition has established an extraordinary reputation for discovering outstanding young artists. Its distinguished laureates include Karl-Heinz Schütz, Denis Bouriakov, Łukasz Długosz, Alexandra Grot, Adriana Ferreira, Sebastian Jacot, Joséphine Olech, Alberto Navarra, and Federico Altare, many of whom have gone on to become internationally acclaimed soloists, orchestral principals, chamber musicians, and educators.

Guided by the artistic vision of Emmanuel Pahud, Martin Fröst, and Nikolaj Znaider, the Carl Nielsen International Competition continues to set the highest artistic standards while celebrating the creativity, individuality, and musical legacy of Denmark’s greatest composer.

2026 Competition Highlights

• The 2026 competition welcomed 24 outstanding young flutists selected through an international preliminary round.
• Finalists performed with the Odense Symphony Orchestra, one of Denmark’s leading orchestras.
• The jury was chaired by Sophie Cherrier and included András Adorján, Petri Alanko, Silvia Careddu, Guoliang Han, Brit Halvorsen, and Rune Most.
• In addition to monetary prizes, the First Prize included a recording contract with Orchid Classics and international concert engagements.
• The competition continues to be recognized as one of the world’s premier launching pads for emerging professional flutists.
